Wegovy is semaglutide, the same molecule as Ozempic, in doses and a label built for weight management rather than diabetes. It has been on the market since 2021, it has more trial data behind it than any other weight-loss drug, and in 2026 it picked up two things that change the review: a 7.2 mg "HD" dose that lifts the average weight loss into tirzepatide territory, and a self-pay price that dropped from $499 to $349 a month.

This review covers what it does, what it costs, where it falls short, and the part the label does not mention: what happens at the table once your appetite is a third of what it was.

What Wegovy Is and Who It Is For

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection you give yourself in the stomach, thigh or upper arm with a pre-filled pen. The dose steps up over several months from 0.25 mg to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, and since March 2026 some patients can go further to 7.2 mg. It is FDA-approved for adults and adolescents 12 and up with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition. It also carries indications to reduce major cardiovascular events in adults with heart disease and obesity, and for MASH, a form of fatty liver disease. Those extra labels matter mostly because insurers read them.

What It Did in Trials

The honest read: at 2.4 mg Wegovy is clearly effective and clearly behind Zepbound on average. At 7.2 mg the averages are close. Your result will not be an average either way.

Cost in 2026

Three ways people pay. With commercial insurance that covers it, the savings card can bring a month to as little as $25, subject to the card's caps. Without coverage, NovoCare Pharmacy's self-pay price is $349 a month for the standard doses and $399 for HD, with a $199 introductory price on the first two fills of the 0.25 and 0.5 mg starter doses for new patients. Medicare Part D members may qualify for the $50 monthly copay through the GLP-1 Bridge program that began in July 2026. Coverage rules change constantly; confirm with your plan or the NovoCare site before you plan around a number.

Side Effects That Actually Come Up

Nausea is the big one, concentrated in the week or two after each dose increase. Constipation, reflux, burping, fatigue and food aversions follow. Most are manageable with how and what you eat: smaller portions, no fried or greasy food on step-up weeks, cold food when warm food smells wrong, fiber and water for the constipation. The GLP-1 nausea guide and constipation guide go through it. The label also lists rarer but serious risks, including pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, and a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents. Anything that is not a food question, including whether to hold a dose, goes to your prescriber.

What Nobody Tells You About Eating on Wegovy

The appetite drop is the point of the drug and it is also the trap. When four bites fill you up, those four bites are your entire supply of protein for the meal. If they are bread, you lose muscle along with fat and you feel it in your energy and your strength within months. The people who do best on Wegovy eat protein first, every meal, and reach 90 to 100 grams a day in small portions. The Wegovy food list ranks the foods that make that possible, and the 7-day GLP-1 meal plan turns it into a week.

How People Actually Get Wegovy in 2026

There are three routes, and the right one depends on your insurance and your diagnosis.

  1. Through your own doctor and insurance. Wegovy is labeled for weight management and for cardiovascular risk reduction, which helps with prior authorization. Ask your prescriber what your plan requires; prior authorization is common.
  2. Self-pay direct from the manufacturer. NovoCare Pharmacy ships Wegovy at the $349 self-pay price (HD $399) with home delivery or CVS pickup. Prices change often, so check the manufacturer's page before you decide.
  3. Through an online weight-loss clinic. A licensed clinician reviews your history by video or questionnaire, prescribes if appropriate, and either sends the prescription to a pharmacy or ships treatment to you. This is the fastest route if your regular doctor will not prescribe for weight loss.

The Part No Prescription Fixes

Every drug on this page works the same way at the dinner table: it shrinks your appetite until three or four bites feel like a meal. That is where the weight loss comes from, and it is also where the muscle loss comes from if those bites are toast and crackers instead of chicken and eggs. The medication does not care what you eat. Your body does.

HealthyOne was built for exactly this. Say what you ate or snap a photo, and it logs the protein before you have cleared the plate. GLP-1 mode raises your protein target to protect muscle while the weight comes off, the dashboard shows protein first, and the 50-plus nutrient tracker underneath flags the iron, fiber and B12 that slide when every meal is tiny. Start with the GLP-1 protein food list and the 7-day GLP-1 meal plan.

FAQ

How much weight do people lose on Wegovy?

In the STEP 1 trial, adults without diabetes lost about 15 percent of their body weight on 2.4 mg over 68 weeks, versus about 2.4 percent on placebo. The 7.2 mg HD dose approved in 2026 reached about 20.7 percent in the STEP UP trial. Individual results range widely in both directions.

What does Wegovy cost without insurance in 2026?

Novo Nordisk's self-pay price through NovoCare is $349 a month for the standard doses, with a $199 introductory price on the 0.25 and 0.5 mg starter doses for new patients. Wegovy HD 7.2 mg is $399. Eligible Medicare Part D members may pay a $50 copay through the GLP-1 Bridge program.

Wegovy or Zepbound: which is better?

In the only head-to-head trial, Zepbound produced more weight loss (20.2 versus 13.7 percent) at Wegovy's 2.4 mg dose. Wegovy's newer 7.2 mg dose narrows that gap. Wegovy is cheaper per month for cash payers and carries a cardiovascular-risk indication that Zepbound does not. Your prescriber can weigh those against your history.

What should I eat on Wegovy?

Small portions, protein first, cold and bland food on dose-increase weeks, and at least 90 to 100 grams of protein a day to protect muscle. Our Wegovy food list and 7-day GLP-1 meal plan lay it out meal by meal.

The Bottom Line

Wegovy is the most studied weight-loss medication on the market, it works for most people who stay on it, and the 2026 self-pay price of $349 made it reachable without insurance. Zepbound beats it on average weight loss at the old dose; the new 7.2 mg HD dose closes most of that gap. The decision between them belongs with your prescriber. The decision about what to eat once the appetite drops belongs with you, and it determines whether the weight you lose is fat or muscle.
